I was at a huge show at Hamburg’s Kaifubad. I had been wondering why the 10-metre platform was open — normally you’re only allowed to jump from a maximum of 5 metres. It had been opened for a training session by the world’s top cliff diver, who was competing in two day’s time. The training session was something in itself though: when a human body falls from ten metres, it accelerates up to almost 50 km/h — which is more than enough reason to record the event in high speed. So I quickly snapped away with the EX-F1 and recorded a couple of dives in slow motion and as a photo sequence. It gives you the chance to see again exactly what the diver is accomplishing. If it was just a matter of jumping straight down, I would do it too. But with a somersault and one-and-a-half twists… I think I’d rather stay dry!
Park Fiction is and remains Hamburg’s number one skateboarding venue. It’s situated two minutes away from the Kiez, opposite Dock 10 where gigantic ships steam in to within spitting distance every minute on the Elbe: this is truly Hamburg City limits! It also inspired Jan Delay and Beginner in their legendary palm tree video. For me and my friend Niklas, there’s no better place to go skating in Hamburg during the summer. Niklas Speer von Cappeln is a Cleptomanicx team rider and turns a few heads in the park with one trick or another. Just like he did a few days ago: he took a bumpy approach and then effortlessly pulled off a slick 360° kickflip. The cool kids gathered round were suitably impressed. I luckily managed to catch most of this on camera as a series of shots; otherwise no one would have believed how cleanly Niklas rotated that thing!
I thought my eyes were deceiving me when Cleptomanicx team rider Niklas Speer von Cappeln pulled off a 360° kickflip on the asphalt in Park Fiction. It was so effortless and incredibly clean-cut. I quickly stashed my board in the corner and got my camera out of my pocket. And sure enough: two attempts later he pulls off the trick again for me just as cleanly in front of the lens. It was almost beyond belief: normally Niklas lands perhaps one out of ten attempts and then he produces two clean 360° kickflips one after the other. It was a successful summer session all round. Barely half an hour later, the sky suddenly turned black and brought us the storm of the year. But we were already sat on the sofa at my house checking out the trick in high-speed slow-mo. Now that’s what I call perfect timing!
It’s now spring and the season in “normal” ski resorts is drawing to a close, so we travelled with the Head International Snowboard Team to the Italian resort of Prato Nevoso to enjoy five days in the slush before the glacier season gets underway. Prato is home to a fun-filled park with relatively small obstacles you can use to really hone your skills without running too much risk of spending the night in hospital rather than the bar. Of course, there should always be someone standing by on such a trip to film everything. Check out for yourself what Felix Urbauer managed to capture with the compact EX-FC 100.
